Education

I am a Member of the Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications in England. I have had numerous reviews of Mathematics and Physics books, mostly at Postgraduate level, published either on their website or in the associated magazine. I completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics with Upper 2nd-Class Honors in 1992 from the Open University in the United Kingdom. This included Introduction to Science, Analysis, Differential Geometry, Non-Euclidean Geometry and Hydrodynamics. I have also completed a Master of Science degree in Mathematics from the same university in 2006. This included Lebesgue Measure and Integration, Applicable Differential Geometry, Solution of Nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equations, Approximation Methods, Fractal Geometry and Advanced Mathematical Methods with Maple.

Experience

I am happy to tutor Year 11/12 students in IB or QCE General, Methods and Specialist Mathematics and Physics. I also tutor undergraduates in Mathematics. I believe that it is the tutor's responsibility to ensure that a student understands the material by finding whatever method works for a given student. I am also interested in tutoring Specialist Mathematics. I would be willing to tutor students from elsewhere in Australia, and elsewhere in the world, via Zoom, providing suitable times can be identified and the students speak English. In December 2023 I started tutoring MA1003 for a student studying over the summer. I received the following review from a student who originally contacted me via another website. This was for Mathematical Methods: John was a lovely math tutor to have in my final year of high school as he was very knowledgeable and used his passion of mathematics to better explain concepts to me. It was hard to leave a lesson confused as he has the ability to explain mathematics through a number of different lenses which caters to all different learning types. In 2023 I tutored Year 12 Mathematical Methods and Physics, and JCU Course MA1003 - Mathematical Techniques. In 2022 I tutored Year 12 IB HL Analysis and Approaches, Year 11 QCE Physics, Mathematical Methods and General Mathematics. I also tutored JCU courses MA1000, MA1020 and PH1005 - Introduction to Physics. In 2021 I tutored Year 11 students in IB HL Analysis and Approaches, QCE Mathematical Methods and General Mathematics. I also tutored a student on CQU (University of Central Queensland) course STAT11050 - Essential Statistics. In 2020 I tutored JCU course MA2000 - Mathematics for Scientists and Engineers and a 2nd Year undergraduate Engineering Mathematics course. I also tutored Year 11 students in Mathematical Methods. In 2019 I was lecturer and course tutor for JCU course MA1000 -Mathematical Foundations. I also tutored MA1020 - Preparing for Mathematics and MA1003 - Mathematical Techniques. In 2018 I tutored NSW students in Year 11 HSC Physics, Year 11 IT, and TAFE Electrical Engineering In 2017 I tutored NSW students in Year 11 IT and Mathematical Methods. I also tutored an undergraduate in Mathematics for Teaching: Calculus and Statistics. In 2016 I tutored Undergraduate Engineering students in Perth in Multi-variable Calculus, Fourier Series and similar topics. In 2015 I tutored a basic Mathematics for Engineering course at a Polytechnic in New Zealand. The Mathematical level was pre-calculus Algebra, beginning Calculus and Basic Statistics.. All listened to my advice. All worked hard and all passed their exam. In 2014, I marked first year undergraduate mathematics assignments and assisted 1st and 2nd year undergraduates with their tutorials and assignments. I also tutored a few students privately. I have a strong interest in mathematics and physics. I am available to tutor mathematics and physics for Year 10 to 12 students and undergraduate students, including General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics, and Physics for students in Year 11 and 12. I tutor undergraduate students for mathematical topics including basic algebra, geometry, calculus, probability and statistics, advanced calculus, multivariable calculus, Fourier series, Fourier transforms, Laplace transforms, and partial differential equations, particularly by the method of separation of variables, such as Laplace's equation. I can also assist students with Linear Algebra, Discrete Mathematics and Modeling and Differential Equations. These are represented by JCU courses: MA2211, MA2210 and MA3211. I also have a strong background in software with knowledge of several computer programming languages. I am happy to tutor students in computer programming languages such as C++, C, Java, and Basic Python. I can also give basic tutoring in Linux type Operating Systems. I have previously worked as a course lecturer and tutor at James Cook University for MA1000 Mathematical Foundations. I have 9 years of experience tutoring Year 10 to 12 students and have previously tutored Year 1 and 2 mathematics undergraduate students, as well as TAFE and Curtin University engineering students. Most of the students I have tutored in last 18 month have passed their exams, all have appreciated my efforts and approach. I enjoy assisting students with passing their exams and advising them on the work they need focus on to be successful. I am often contacted by prospective school student's parents through word of mouth.

Hobbies

Music, climate change, family:2 kids, one at university, cycling, reading, mathematics. I keep in touch with climate change developments and also in research areas in mathematics and physics, partly through the internet, also by writing reviews of Mathematics and Physics books for the Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications. I realized some time ago that Mathematics is a unique subject. I know all subject tutors believe this to some extent, but mathematics is the only academic subject that is mostly a matter of mastering a set of skills, more like a sport or a musical instrument.
